The famous five consists of siblings Julian, Dick, Anne, and their cousin George with Timmy the dog. The five are at a farm in Cornwall. Their host is Mrs. Penruthlan and her husband Mr. Penruthlan, who is a giant farmer and communicates in weird sounds. The children find this quite amusing. They meet an annoying boy called Yan, who follows them everywhere. The barnies have just come everyone is excited. Things are going well, until Yan tells them that he had seen the lights flashing, just like they did in the old smuggling days. Someone is up to something! They are really careful, because the flashing can be seen from just one place on land. And why is the Guv'nor so possessive of Clopper the horse's head? (Clopper is a fake horse)
