The famous five consists of siblings Julian, Dick, Anne, and their cousin George with Timmy the dog. The five are camping in the moors, with the insect-loving master, Mr. Luffy. They make friends with a Toby, whose step-father owns a farm in the area. While exploring, they find a railway and meet its caretaker, Wooden Leg Sam. He tells them about spook trains which don't have a driver. The five are already used to investigating and are suspicious. When they mention going to the railway to Mr. Andrews, Jock's stepfather, he tells them not to go and tries to prevent Jock from meeting the others. What is going on? What is this train hiding? Is Mr. Andrews in the secret?
