The famous five consists of siblings Julian, Dick, Anne, and their cousin George with Timmy the dog. The five are camping at Billycock hill, near Toby's farm. Toby is a fun-loving boy from Julian and Dick's school. On a dark and stormy night, Toby's cousin Jeff and his friend Ray fly of in their newest airplane and disappear. (Jeff and Ray are RAF pilots) The plane is found in the sea. The media claims that they were spies, and were taking the planes with the most modern technology to another country. The five, Toby and his family do not believe this. But first, they must find Jeff and Ray. Are they dead? Are they prisoner somewhere? Where do they find them?
