On the very first day of the holidays, an ash tree breaks through the roof of Kirrin cottage during a gale. Uncle Quentin arranges for them to go to Sooty Lenoir's house- The Smuggler's Top. Sooty spots a light signaling the marshes at night. The children suspect smuggling. There is just one smuggler in the area, Mr. Barling. All they have to do is find how he gets there.
