Tangled Secrets - Anne-Marie Conway

Maddie lost her Nan six months back, but still can't get over it. Everyone around her thinks she should be fine now, but she just isn't. Her mum is too busy worrying about Charlie, who was born prematurely, and Dad isn't even home enough. She can't explain her feelings to her best friend Gemma, let alone anyone else. Until she realizes she has more in common than she thought with Kieran. The guy who always bullies her.

I loved the whole book! I can't believe it almost ended in my DNF pile. Just proves the importance of patience. Anyways, you could find this book super boring and slow at first, but after a point, you can't leave it. I got hooked around page 70. The way Conway has depicted Maddie's desire to camouflage in the background and her initial fear of asking for help is completely relatable. For reference, Maddie is in Year 8, probably thirteen years old. She is a regular adolescents, who needs attention from her parents, and this book is the perfect example of how your thoughts get tangled and imagination runs loose when you have too many secrets. I loved all the teachers, especially Vivian and Mrs. Palmer. Kieran's backstory unravels slowly, but it's extremely well crafted. Gemma was so awesome as a best friend and their relationship was very realistic and raw. The suspense is totally worth it and I was in complete shock when I reached the climax. Each and every part of the book fits in perfectly in the end. From the very start, the cover art makes complete sense and it's so beautiful. I can't give five stars because of the dragging start, but otherwise it's a perfect read for anyone wanting a YA contemporary with a hint of suspense.
