My first book by Sarah Dessen and I hadn't heard much of her before searching her up mid read and discovering she used to be a big author a few years ago. I picked it up mainly because of the gorgeous cover, and unfortunately, I was very let down. There's a ton of characters in this story that completely distract from it just being a YA romance. I was very confused by the plot and where it was going, and what it was trying to focus on. There's random characters popping up for a long part of the book and it's hard to keep track of who's who. I couldn't relate to a single character or care about any one of them.
I'm trying to come up with any reason to bump the book up to a two-star but I can't find anything about it that I can appreciate. Maybe that is something Dessen's older readers would appreciate for the nostalgic value in the writing style, but I didn't experience any of that. In hindsight, I should've DNFed this instead of turning it into a hate read.
