1) Entertainment- Most books, especially fictional books are made with the intention of engaging the reader. Usually, they live up to this expectation and keep you absorbed for hours. They have the power of transporting you into a different universe and it is an experience you must try.

2) Knowledge- Be it fictional or non-fictional, books are filled with knowledge and nuggets of wisdom. Even in the silliest novels, you are likely to find some piece of advice that could help you in the future.

First Term at Malory Towers is a children's novel by Enid Blyton with some great tips on Jealousy, Managing your Temper, and Multitasking. All of this treasure in a fictional novel written nearly a century back!

3) Language- Books help you gain confidence in your speaking and writing skills. From vocabulary to grammar, you can develop your linguistic skills with the help of books.

Did you know that a lot of  people read newspapers for improving language skills? Try reading a novel and get in some fun along with that knowledge. Share your experience in the comments!

4) Imagination-

This is one of the biggest differences between movies and books. In a film, you already have the character in front of you and you can hear their voices. But in a book, there are only descriptions. It is up to you how to interpret the settings, sounds, smells, textures and tastes.

5) Memory- Novels revolve around fictional characters and their backgrounds. They could possibly be in a fictional world.  Reading many books and understanding the plots takes memory. People assume that reading fiction leaves no space for reality, but in fact, every new memory you create helps strengthen old ones.

Amazingly enough, every new memory you create forges new synapses (brain pathways) and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods. Excerpt from Lifehack.org

6) Patience and Concentration- For reading, one needs to sit down and focus. The book is your center of attention and this helps to build concentration skills for a longer time. It also affects your patience because you have to wait and continue reading to find how the book ends. (

7) Empathy and Emotional Intelligence- Books require you to understand a person or fictional character you don't know and bond with them. This bond develops through empathy, respect, liking and attachment for the characters. It helps you build better relationship with people around you.

8) Therapy and De-stress- Being in a different world soothes humans and helps the brain and body relax. According to a research done by the University of Sussex, reading is the fastest way to destress, reducing your stress levels by 68%. So when upset, grab a book and forget your worries :]

9) Gives you Perspective- Reading allows you to experience the life of another person and the opinions that they developed because of it. Books help you understand and accept others thoughts, no matter how unique they are to yours.

Imagine communicating with people who have died long back. Understanding thoughts of celebrities you can't reach out to. Living experiences of great philosophers that can change your life! Books are truly a blessing.

10) Happiness- Reading a great book gives you unlimited joy. Even if it's not that great, you are motivated by the thought that you got through it. The feeling you experience after reading your first book is unimaginable. (I couldn't stop boasting after I read a 700+ pages book)

11) Better things to think about- Books give you food for thought. At least, its better than thinking what happens in the next season of your fav web series. Most novels (not including books for children) have drawn a line between fiction, and reality. This honesty is something you don't find in movies which give you unrealistic expectations. The reality depicted in books helps you understand the outside world and prepare yourself for the struggles.

One book that still makes me think is The Time of my Life by Cecelia Ahern.
