9 Surprisingly Meaningful Things to Read Other Than Novels

Hey BookGurus! As a new reader, it is important for you to make the right reading choices so that your love for books multiplies tenfold. While you are new to reading, it can get hard to choose a good read because you have too few or too many options on hand. This is our guide on the possible things that you can read.

1) Short Stories- If you are not willing to commit to reading an entire book, this one's for you. They are straightforward, and usually less than fifteen pages. Sudha Murthy is a great place to start, especially if you are interested in non-fiction. As an experienced woman, she has distributed nuggets of wisdom throughout her short stories, most of which are true stories. Ruskin Bond too is a great author and always gives you something to think about. A lot of his stories are based in Northern India, and he captures the beauty of the hills beautifully.

2) Novellas- I haven't read many novellas, but they shorter than novels and longer than short stories. To simplify, a condensed version of a novel. they have fewer characters and plot twists, so it is easy to wrap your head around one. They are short enough to finish in a few sittings, and as a bonus, they are usually cheap.

3) Magazines- A lot of magazines have brilliant articles, that you can choose according to what topic you like. Start off with newspaper supplements. They are filled with articles on health, parenting, nutrition, and politics. My favorite are the casual conversation types. They are just so friendly and relatable!

4) Adaptations of Classics- As a teenager, I find classics too heavy to understand. But adaptations are literally life savers. They have the same bestseller plotline, just that the vocabulary is made much easier. I don't mean that you shouldn't read classics. You definitely can, but adaptations are so much more easy and short. My favorites are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

5) Audiobooks (I know this is not exactly reading, but still..)- This is the best for busy people, or people who are just too lazy. Audiobooks take way longer to finish than reading books (At least in my case). But other than this, there is no reason why you shouldn't listen to audiobooks. They are perfect for multi-tasking. Just make sure that you choose a narrator whose voice you like, and you are all set. Don't forget that your reading preferences may vary from your listening preferences.

6) Comics- Definitely the best for less imaginative people. I know for sure that Vibhiksha started reading from here. My top favorite is El Deafo by Cece Belle. Tinkle is also a well known magazine with multiple comics. The quirky caricatures and speech bubbles simplify the whole story and make it enjoyable.

7) Books with Pictures-
Moreover the same logic as comics, but more advanced. As a child, I loved books with pictures and they make the reading time way faster. Plus, kids love seeing the pictures alone.

8) Biographies and Autobiographies- Inspiration, Knowledge and Tips. These books are full of them. There is so much to learn from someone's experiences. You learn from other's mistakes. Understand their choices, their failures, their success. And in the end, start your own journey to your passion. There are so many well researched biographies out there. And autobiographies never cease to amaze me. Who would have thought that Saina Nehwal or Mary Kom can write so well?

9) Self Help- This is the most straightforward category for those who just want to learn. These books consist of tips and techniques that you can use in daily life. But it is useless reading these kind of books if you don't implement the strategies. They might not be as entertaining as fiction, but are quite handy.
